Soulé, Dordrecht, July 1, 2011
On the side of a busy street leading to Dordrecht centre, in between a handbag shop and a glasses shop, we saw a man and woman in conversation. Not wanting to be rude and interrupt, we decided to continue on instead of approaching them. We made it about 5 feet when we knew we needed to approach them. We mustered our combined courage, retraced through the one way traffic and told them we had a very important book we needed to share with them. The woman only spoke French and Lingala, and, not very interested in a book, walked off. Soule, however, stayed and told us he wanted a book. With the combined difficulties of language and the business of the street, we were unsure how much he took from this first encounter. After we had taught Soule for a couple of weeks, he told us “Jullie lopen samen met God.” – we walk together with God, and that the initial recognition of the Spirit was how he knew to continually meet with us.
We sometimes had a difficult time trying to communicate with him, what with the four different languages floating around in the room. But finally, we came to a point where we knew that Soulé had a testimony. He was very excited to be baptized, and he told us, “I’m not getting baptized for you or for you. I want to be baptized because God wants me to be.” (Written by Sister Reber)
